UF/IFAS Global Student Spotlight
Emmanuel Domonko. With an estimated 670,000 children under five years of age dying annually, approximately 250,000-500,000 children in developing countries become blind each year due to Vitamin A deficiency (VAD).The highest prevalence of vitamin A deficiency is in southeast Asia and Africa. Emmanuel Domonko is gathering data about consumer preference and willingness to pay for biofortified rice that could save lives, and assist with preventing blindness.
UF/IFAS Global Impact
Since the start of the USAID funded Innovative Agricultural Research Initiative (iAGRI), UF/IFAS has trained 14 Tanzanian students (10 MS candidates, 4 PhD candidates). As of December 2016, all of the students have completed their degree programs and returned to positions in Tanzania where they help to improve the country’s agricultural production and food security.
